Uttar Pradesh celebrates Foundation Day

The Uttar Pradesh state was formed on January 24, 1950. Under the order called United Provinces (Alteration of Name) Order 1950, the provinces in the region were grouped together to form the state of Uttar Pradesh. As India hadn’t become a republic then, the order was passed by the Governor General of India. India became independent in 1947. However, the country took two years to frame its constitution and become a republic. So between 1947 and 1950, India still followed British Principles. And therefore, there was a governor-general. Chakravarthi Rajagopalachari acted as the Governor General during this period. For this reason, UP was made a state under his order.

History

In 1937, the British Government create a United Province regime in the region. This region was renamed UP in 1950 and several other provinces joined to it. In 2000, a part of UP in the north was made a separate state called Uttarakhand. It was the 27th state of India.

Significance of the state in Indian History

Indian Rebellion of 1857 happened here in UP. Several freedom fighters such as Chandra Shekar Azad, Motilal Nehru, and Mangal Pandey were from UP. Prime Minister Modi’s constituency Varanasi is in UP. Amethi constituency is also in UP.
