National Anti-Terrorism Day

Every year May 21st is observed as National Anti-Terrorism Day.

What is the objective of the day?

The objective of the day is to spread the message of peace & harmony and wean away the youth from terrorism by highlighting the sufferings of people and by showing how terrorism threatens India’s national interest. To achieve this government organizes several anti-terrorism programs.

Why May 21st is chosen?

On May 21st, 1991, former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated by a suicide bomber belonging to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) at Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu. 16 others have also died in the incident. After the assassination, the V.P. Singh government made an official announcement to observe May 21st as National Anti-Terrorism Day. On this day, an Anti-Terrorism pledge is taken by all government officials. This year also commemorates the 30th death anniversary of Rajiv Gandhi.

How Anti-Terrorism Day is observed?

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has asked all government offices, public sector undertakings (PSUs), and other public institutions to observe Anti-Terrorism Day on May 21st and take the ‘Anti-Terrorism Pledge” in their rooms/offices. The Ministry also asked the government departments to use innovative ways to propagate the message of anti-terrorism through social medial platforms.
