International Air Connectivity Scheme

The International Air Connectivity Scheme (IACS) has been launched by the Ministry of Civil Aviation with the objective of enhancing air connectivity from India’s certain states with some selected international destinations so as to promote socio-economic growth.

Overview:

This newly launched scheme has been supported by the State Governments.
The State Governments of Manipur, Assam, and Tripura have already identified routes to connect Imphal, Guwahati, and Agartala with international destinations like Dhaka, Bangkok, Yangon, Kathmandu, Mandalay, Hanoi, Chittagong, and Kunming.

Development of airports to international standards

The up-gradation and development of the airports to international standards is a long and continuous process and is mostly undertaken by the concerned airport’s operators depending upon traffic demand, commercial viability, availability of land, etc.

International Airports in the North East region

Currently, in the North East region, there are two international airports at Imphal and Guwahati. They are operated by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and Guwahati International Airport Limited (GIAL) respectively.

Development works in the airports of North East

Both AAI and GIAL have undertaken various kinds of construction of the New Integrated Terminal Building (NITB) and several other associated works at their respective airports. This has been done to improve the services like the increase in the passenger handling capacity. In addition, AAI has developed the Agartala Airport’s new terminal building in view of conducting international operations in the future. A New Integrated Terminal Building for 2.4 Million Passengers Per Annum has also been constructed at the Imphal Airport with the aim of augmenting passenger handling capacity.
