Government to Reduce Road Accident Deaths by 50%
According to Minister for Road Transport & Highways Nitin Gadkari, central government has set target to reduce road accident deaths by 50% by year 2024.
Role of Corporates in Arresting Road Fatalities
- This target was highlighted while addressing virtual session on ‘Role of Corporates in Arresting Road Fatalities’ which was organised by FICCI.
- Minister emphasised on need for identification of ‘black spot’ in each state, district and city.
- He also said, World Bank and ADB have already sanctioned a scheme under which Government is allocating Rs.14,000 crores for states, NHAI and other stakeholders to remove black spots vulnerable to accidents.
4-E formula to reduce deaths
Ministry of road & transport is seeking hard to reduce road accident deaths by restructuring and strengthening four ‘E’ of road safety. 4E’s include- Engineering (road & automobile engineering), Economy, Enforcement and Education.
Road accidents in India
Road accidents in India are a major cause of deaths, injuries and property damage. According to world bank data, though India accounts for 1 per cent of world’s vehicles but it accounts for 11 per cent of global death in road accidents. It stands highest worldwide. About 4.5 lakh road crashes occurs, in which 1.5 lakh people die per annum in India. It witnesses 53 road crashes every hour and killing of 1 person every 4 minutes. As per report, road accidents costs at Rs 5.96 lakh crore or 3.14 per cent of gross domestic product (GDP).
