Alabama Underwater Forest

The Alabama underwater forest is a 60,000 year old remain of an ancient forest of cypress trees located some 60 feet under the waters of Gulf of Mexico. It was covered by layers of sediments which protected the remnants from decomposing. The forest was discovered in 2004 when Hurricane Ivan pulled off the sediment layers. It is under threat from salvage companies and furniture companies. With the change in US administration, there is renewed call for declaration of this forest as a marine sanctuary.
