75th Edition of the World Health Assembly

From 22nd to 28th May 2022, the 75th World Health Assembly is being held in Geneva, Switzerland. This is the first in-person Health Assembly since the COVID-19 pandemic began.

What is the theme of this year’s health assembly?

“Health for peace, peace for health” is the theme for this year’s assembly. The COVID-19 pandemic along with other health emergencies has showcased the WHO’s role in coordinating all forms of response to put a check on such events. A key theme of the Health assembly is to strengthen the preparedness mechanism for responding to health emergencies.

What programs are being held at this event?

A series of strategic roundtable meetings are being held at the 75th World Health Assembly. During these meetings, the delegates of the World Health Assembly, representatives of various civil societies, partner agencies, and experts from WHO will be discussing future and current public health issues that are of global importance.

What were the important decisions taken?

On the first day of the 75th World Health Assembly, the member states agreed to adopt policies that will be improving the financing model of the World Health Organization. The Sustainable Financing Working Group is made up of the member states of WHO and was set up in January 2021 and chaired by Björn Kümmel, from Germany recommended the improvement of the financial model.

What is the World Health Assembly?

The World Health Organization’s decision-making body is the World Health Assembly. This assembly is attended by delegations representing all the member countries of WHO. It focuses on a specific health agenda that is prepared by the Executive Board. The World Health Assembly’s main functions are to govern the policies of the World Health Organization, appoint WHO’s Director-General, review as well as approve the programme budget, and supervise the various financial policies. In Geneva, Switzerland, the Health Assembly is held every year.
