Which among the following is the fuel used in fast breeder test reactor at Kalpakkam?
Q. Which among the following is the fuel used in fast breeder test reactor at Kalpakkam?
Answer: Mixture of plutonium and uranium carbide
Notes: The Fast Breeder Test Reactor (FBTR) at Kalpakkam uses a mixture of plutonium and uranium carbide as fuel. The fuel is 70% plutonium carbide and 30% uranium carbide. The plutonium is extracted from irradiated fuel in the Madras power reactors and reprocessed in Tarapur. The FBTR is a loop-type, sodium-cooled fast reactor. It was designed to produce 40 MW of thermal power and 13.2 MW of electrical power. The FBTR has rarely operated at its designed capacity. It was shut down between 1987 and 1989 due to technical problems. The Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research in Kalpakkam, Tamilnadu, is responsible for India's fast breeder reactor program.
