Notes: The operation 'Gangajal' was started in Bhagalpur district of Bihar in 1979. It ended in 1980. Under this operation, Police blinded trial or convicted criminals by pouring acid into their eyes. The incidents from 1979 to 1980 are also referred as 'The Bhagalpur blindings'. The Bhagalpur blinding case had made criminal jurisprudence history by becoming the first case in which the Indian Supreme Court ordered compensation for violation of basic human rights.
