Notes: Saraswati Samman is the most prestigious award of K K Birla Foundation. This is an annual award given for outstanding literary work of an Indian citizen published during the last 10 years in any of the languages included in Schedule VIII to the Constitution of India. In the beginning, literary works in 15 languages were considered. But since 1992 when Konkani, Manipuri and Nepali were included in schedule VIII to the Constitution of India, the number of languages considered became 18. In 2004, Bodo, Dogri, Maithili and Santhali have also been included in Schedule VIII to the Constitution. Thus from 2005 onwards works in 22 languages are being considered for Saraswati Samman.
