What is Competency Mapping?

Competency Mapping is a process which helps to identify strengths and weaknesses of an individual with the aim to enable the person to understand oneself to the point where career development efforts are directed.

Competencies are usually attained from some particular jobs in an organization. Few such job categories include strategic profiles, relationship management roles, innovation, leadership, risk-taking, decision-making, emotional intelligence etc.  The first step in the process of competency mapping is job analysis where core competency requirements of the company are listed. This is followed by the development of the competency scale on the already identified parameters. The real mapping of employees is usually done by making use of the 360-degree method where all peers, customers and first reports rate the employees.
