Nutrient Based Subsidy Scheme

The CCEA recently approved the fixing of NBS rates for phosphatic and potassic fertilizers for the period 2020-21.

About NBS Scheme

Nutrient Based Subsidy Scheme was introduced in 2010 and is applicable to potassic (K based) and phosphatic (P based) fertilizers. It is implemented by the Union Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers. Under this program, the subsidy for the fertilizers are fixed annually on the basis of nutrient content present in them.

Phosphatic and Potassic fertilizers

The potassic and phosphatic fertilizers are those that provide potassium and phosphorus- 2 of the 3 major primary nutrients required by crops. The other major primary nutrient is nitrogen. The NBS scheme is applied to fertilizers like muriate of potash, di-ammonium phosphate, mono-ammonium phosphate, triple super phosphate, ammonium sulphate, etc.

Ammonium Phosphate

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) approved the inclusion of ammonium phosphate under the NBS scheme. Ammonium phosphate is a complex fertilizer. It is a source of nitrogen and phosphorus to the crops. It is applied to the soil to promote healthy growth of the crop plants.
