World Veterinary Day Observed on April 25th

April 25th was observed as World Veterinary Day and the theme for the 2020 event is ‘Environmental Protection for Improving Animal and Human Health’.

About the Day

The World Veterinary Day was designated by the World Veterinary Association in 2011. The day is observed to raise awareness about the importance of the veterinary profession and to promote animal welfare for improving human health, environment, food safety, etc. The 2020 event was marked on the theme of ‘Environmental Protection for Improving Animal and Human Health’.

World Veterinary Association

The World Veterinary Association represents over 80 veterinary medical associations across the world. It was established in 1959 in Madrid at the 16th International Veterinary Congress. It aims to promote animal health and welfare. The WVA works with FAO, WHO and also World Organisation for Animal Health.

World Veterinary Day Award

On this occasion, the World Veterinary Day Award is presented for the best contribution to the veterinary profession. The Kenya Veterinary Association received the first such award. The 2019 award was presented to the Uganda Veterinary Association for its vaccination campaigns for different species.
