Union Government bans NSCN-K for 5 years

Union Government has banned Naga rebel group National Socialist Council of Nagaland- Khaplang (NSCN-K) for five years. The organisation has been banned under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967.
Decision in this regard was taken at Union Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi.
NSCN-K was has been banned following due legal process as it had unilaterally abrogated the ceasefire agreement with the Union government and perpetrated a string of terror attacks. In June 2015, it was involved in brutal killing of 18 soldiers of 6 Dogra Regiment in an ambush in Chandel district of Manipur.

About National Socialist Council of Nagaland

  • The NSCN was formed 1980 with an objective of establishing a sovereign state of Nagalim by unifying all the areas inhabited by the Naga people in Northeast India and Myanmar.
  • It was founded by Isak Chishi Swu, Thuingaleng Muivah and S.S. Khaplang opposing the Shillong Accord of 1975 signed by the then Naga National Council (NNC) with Union Government.
  • Later in 1988, Naga nationalist Military group split into two factions viz. NSCN-K led by S.S. Khaplang (a Myanmarese Naga) and the NSCN-IM jointly led by Isak Chishi Swu and Thuingaleng Muivah.
  • In 2001, both factions had settled a ceasefire agreement with the Union government. But was unilaterally abrogated by NSCN-K after brutal killing of 18 soldiers in June 2015.
  • NSCN-K has strength of around 1,000 cadres with several camps across the border in Myammar.
  • In May 2015, 9 militant groups of the northeast including the NSCN-K and ULFA had formed a conglomerate of insurgents called ‘United National Liberation Front of West South East Asia’.
  • In August 2015, NSCN-IM had entered into an historic Peace Accord (Framework Agreement) with Union government to bring lasting peace in Nagaland.
