UN mission in Iraq gets extended for another year: Security Council

The Security Council has given its mandate to extend the UN Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI) for another year and urged all communities there to contribute in the country’s political development.
The Security Council expressed its support to the people and the government of Iraq in their endeavor to build a secure, stable, federal, united and democratic nation based on the rule of law and respect for human rights.

What is UNAMI?

  • The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) is a political mission which was set up by the Council in 2003, at the request of the Iraqi government.
  • It is provides advice and assistance in the following ways: Promotes political dialogue and national reconciliation; Assists electoral process; Facilitates regional dialogue between Iraq and its neighbors; Promotes the protection of human rights; Advises on judicial and legal reform.
