Shramik Trains generated Rs 360 crores revenue
The Railway Board recently informed that the Indian Railways has carried 4,450 Shramik trains so far carrying 6 million migrant workers generating revenue of Rs 360 crores.
The average fare of Shramik special train was around Rs 600 per ticket. Though the revenue seems bigger, the Railways collected only 15% of cost of operations. The operating cost of a special migrant train was around Rs 75-80 lakhs.
The demand for the Shramik special trains is reducing. This proves that majority of the workers have been sent back home. In May 22, 2020, the demand for Shramik trains from the states was around 200. The number had come down to 38 in June 1, 2020.
The Indian Railways is playing a major role during COVID-19 crisis in the country. The National transporter carried food grains that were distributed under Atma Nirbhar Bharat Yojana and Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana. Also, the Indian Railway coaches were converted into isolation wards.
The Indian Railways also helped the country with its freight transport carrying the essentials like milk, vegetables, fruits, etc.
