SC refuses to stay Bombay HC decision to ban Maratha Quota

Supreme Court bench has refused to stay Maharashtra government’s appeal challenging  Bombay high court earlier decision  to ban 16% Maratha reservation quota and 5% quota for backward Muslims in government jobs.
SC bench headed of Chief Justice H L Dattu and comprising Justices A K Sikri and R K Agrawal dismissed the petitions filed by Maharashtra Government and private individuals in this regard.
Background
Earlier in June 2014, then Congress-NCP coalition government had announced 16 per cent reservation quota to Marathas in employment and education under reservation for backward classes and additional  5 per cent reservation to Muslims in educational institutions owing to their social and educational backwardness based on findings of Justice Sachar Committee.
However, this reservation quota had exceeded the 50 per cent cap fixed by Supreme Court.
However in November 2014, Bombay High Court stayed this newly introduced state government quota complying with the SC’s 50 per cent fixed cap.
