President’s Secretary Sanjay Kothari named the next CVC by PM led panel

The appointment of the CVC (Chief Vigilance Commissioner) was criticized throughout India as the new appointee was a part of the Search Committee. After the wide criticization, President Secretary Sanjay Kothari has now been recommended by the PM led panel.

Highlights

The Central Vigilance Commission is the premier Government Agency that prevents corruption. It was established in 1964 as recommended by the Santhanam Committee. It was neither a statutory body nor a constitutional body. In 2003, the Parliament enacted a law conferring statutory status to the CVC.

The CVC is appointed by the President on recommendation of a three-member committee that consists of Prime Minister as head. The CVC holds office for four years till they attain the age of 65 years (whichever is earlier). The CVC is not eligible to be employed under any other Central or State Government Agency after his or her retirement.

Functions of CVC

The CVC makes investigation over references made by the Central Government. The Central Government shall make recommendations against an employee under Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. It has powers to give directions to the CBI under Delhi Special Police Establishment act.
