National Apprenticeship Training Scheme extended for 5-years

Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given its approval for continuation of National Apprenticeship Training Scheme for next five years.

Key Points

  • Cabinet gave approval for stipendiary support of 3 thousand 54 crore rupees to apprentices who undergo apprenticeship training under National Apprenticeship Training Scheme.
  • Approval was given for the period from 2021-22 to 2025-26.
  • Under it, industry & commercial organisations will train approximately nine lakhs’ apprentices.
  • Government has also approved an expenditure of around three thousand crore rupees for next five years. This expenditure is about 4.5 times the expenditure made in last five years.
  • Increased expenditure on apprenticeship is in line with the push that National Education Policy 2020 has given to apprenticeship.

National Apprenticeship Training Scheme.

  • This scheme is a well-established scheme, which has demonstrated to enhance employability of students who have completed the apprenticeship training successfully.
  • Under this scheme, apprentices who have completed graduate programme in Engineering, Science, Humanities, and Commerce will be given stipend of nine thousand while those completing diploma in stated fields, will be given stipend of eight thousand rupees per month.

Aims and Objectives of the scheme

This scheme was launched with the objective of providing industry apprenticeship opportunities to general graduates exiting in April 2019 through National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS). It aims to enhance employability of Indian youth by providing ‘on the job work exposure’.

Who are eligible for this scheme?

This scheme has been launched for students in degree courses, primarily non-technical, in order to introduce employable skills to their learning and promoting apprenticeship as integral to education.
