International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women

November 25th has been designated as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women by The United Nations General Assembly of under adoption of resolution 54/134.
On 7th February 2000, the UN General Assembly adopted resolution 54/134 and officially designated 25th November to the observed as International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women every year.

Why 25th November was selected?
The date was selected to honor the Mirabal sisters, three political activists from the Dominican Republic who were assassinated in 1960 by order of their country?s ruler, Rafael Trujillo (1930-1961). Women’s rights activists at the Latin American and Caribbean Feminist Encuentros have observed 25 November as a day against gender-based violence and to combat and raise awareness of violence against women since 1981.
