India-US bilateral meet on September 24

Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi will hold meeting with US President, Joe Biden on September 24, 2021 in Washington.

Highlights

  • During the meeting, both the sides will discuss regarding the developments in Afghanistan, ways to combat radicalism, extremism & cross-border terrorism and expansion of India-US global partnership.
  • Both of them want to talk regarding the ways of pulling both the countries even closer at every level of interaction between their societies.
  • US Vice-President Kamala Harris will meet Narendra Modi on September 23 in Washington. This will be the first meeting between both of the leaders.
  • They are also expected to discuss ways of boosting trade and investment ties, strengthening their defence & security collaborations as well as clean energy partnership.
  • Narendra Modi will also address the UN General Assembly on September 25 and attend other events hosted on its side-lines, including an event on Covid-19 hosted by President Biden where PM Modi is likely to announce the resumption of Vaccine Maitri.

NSA Ajit Doval and the Foreign Secretary are accompanying PM Modi on his US visit. External affairs minister, S. Jaishankar is already in the US.

India-US Relations

India has been maintaining its friendly relations with the United States since the India’s freedom movement and its continued well after independence from the United Kingdom in 1947. United States had made Pakistan a Central Treaty Organization (CENTO) treaty-ally in the year 1954. India’s core national interests and concerns were acknowledged by the United Nations under the administrations of Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama. Both the countries signed the Logistics Exchange Memorandum of Agreement in 2016 and India was also declared as a Major Defense Partner of the US.
