Haribhau Bagde of BJP elected as new Speaker of Maharashtra Legislative Assembly

Senior BJP legislator Haribhau Bagde was unanimously elected as new Speaker of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly. His name was announced by Protem Speaker Jiva Gavit in the newly-constituted Maharashtra Legislative Assembly. He was elected unanimously after Shiv Sena and Congress withdrew their candidates.
Bagde is the MLA from Phulambhari in Aurangabad district of Maharashtra. He had held several important posts in the BJP as well as the Sena-BJP government in 1995.

Constitutional provision for Speaker of State Legislative Assembly

Article 178 of Constitution: Speaker will preside over the sessions of the Legislative Assembly of an Indian State. The Legislative Assembly in a State, at its very first session shall elect a Speaker and a Deputy Speaker, from among its members. The Speaker remains in office till the next Speaker is sworn in.
