Government announces subsidy for starting community radio stations

The government has announced subsidy for starting community radio stations. It has announced 90% of subsidy in Northeast and 75% in other States to give a boost to the community radio sector. This was announced at a conference of state ministers (SIMCON) in New Delhi organised by the Information and Broadcasting Ministry after seven years. As per the existing rules, the ministry provides a subsidy of 50% up to a limit of Rs 7.5 lakh for starting community radio stations. For adopting a comprehensive and integrated approach to communication and information dissemination, the Government would formulate National Information and Communication Policy in consultation with the States. Government has also decided to come up with a new dedicated Doordarshan channel for the north-eastern states in the January next year. The channel will showcase the richness, variety and diversity of the local culture and integrate them with the rest of the country.
