The farmer suicides in the state have increased by 61% in 2019 as compared to 2018. This was primarily due to unseasonal rains that lashed the state in October and November. The rains destroyed almost 70% of Kharif crops. The draught prone belt of Marathwada and Vidarbha recorded the largest number of farmer suicides.
Between January and November in 2018 the number of farmer suicides in Maharashtra were 2,518. In 2019, the number was 2,532 for the same duration. The issue certainly in the region is highly troublesome!
