HVEC to replace the MPEG-4 standard

New H.265 or High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) standard will be the successor to the MPEG-4 standard and will be used for delivering high definition images on the small screen of mobile handsets.

What is special about HVEC?

The H.265, more popularly known as HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding) encoder and decoder will allow media hosts and content creates to bring rich content to their users and high resolutions and high quality. The encoder is software implementation on Intel x86 based platforms, capable of High Definition (HD) broadcast quality video coding with up to 50% compression gains over H.264 based encoders. This will enable Broadcasters and Over-The-Top (OTT) television service providers to realize higher capacity in the transmission of HD as well as Ultra HD content at lower bitrates.

On April 13, 2013, HEVC/H.265 was approved as an ITU-T standard.
On June 7, 2013, the HEVC/H.265 standard was formally published on the ITU-T website as a free download.
