EC sets up multi-agency grid to curb use of black money in polls

The Election Commission set up a multi-agency grid of revenue and security intelligence agencies to curb the use of black money in Lok Sabha and assembly polls.

  • The intelligence agencies include the officials from income tax intelligence and investigations, Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU), Directorate of Revenue Intelligence, Central Economic Intelligence Bureau, Narcotics Control Bureau and the security forces of Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), Border Security Force (BSF), CISF and the Railway Protection Force.
  • The officials-in-charge of intelligence in these respective departments will meet twice a week at the EC headquarters (Nirvachan Sadan) to update it about suspected financial movements.
  • These agencies will compile their respective information in a standard format so that the poll panel is updated about the use of illegal money and other inducements in the polls.
  • After these meetings, a comprehensive report would be prepared shared with the respective Chief Electoral Offices of various states and UnionTerritories.

Additionally, the intelligence wing of the BSF will track the movement of cash, fake currency and drugs from the Pakistan and Bangladesh borders while the same would be done by the SSB along the Nepal and Bhutan borders.
