Andhra Pradesh and Telangana introduce 5 lakh rupees Accident Insurance Scheme for transport drivers

Andhra Pradesh and Telangana states have jointly launched a new five-lakh rupees Accident Insurance Scheme for transport drivers.
The scheme came into on 1 May 2015 coinciding with the May Day (International Labour Day).
It was formally launched by Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu at Rajhamundry while Telangana Chief Minister Chandrasekhara Rao made the announcement in Hyderabad.
Under the Accident Insurance Scheme

  • The registered transport drivers will get a Rs 5 lakh insurance cover.
  • The enrolled will get an accident death insurance of Rs 2 lakh under the Pradhan Mantri Bima Suraksha Yojana by opening a Jan Dhan Yojana account.
  • While the insurer will give Rs 3 lakh for which both states government will ink a MoU.
  • This scheme apart from providing monetary insurance will also cover education of two children of the beneficiary.

The Transport drivers have to register their names on a specified portal named labour.ap.gov.in to facilitate the initiatives. The Labour Department will issue Smart cards to all those who are registered under the scheme.
Under this programme, about 11 lakh transport drivers and journalists in the two Telugu states will be benefited. About 16 thousand Home Guards in Telangana will also be benefited by the scheme.
