Assam Launches Nameri Wild Classroom Initiative

The Assam Forest Department launched the Nameri Wild Classroom initiative on 10–12 October 2026 at Nameri Tiger Reserve. The residential programme is open to students from Class 8 onwards, including college students, and offers two- and three-day learning sessions.

Nameri Tiger Reserve

Nameri Tiger Reserve is in Assam’s Sonitpur district and includes Nameri National Park. Nameri National Park was declared a national park in 1998, while the reserve was established under Project Tiger in 1999. The Jia-Bharali River is an important watercourse in the reserve, which contains riverine and forest habitats. The initiative was announced by Assam’s Forest and Climate Change Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah. Nameri Tiger Reserve Field Director Piraisoodan B stated that the park authority conceptualised the programme and that it is scheduled to begin during the current tourism season.

Programme Structure and Curriculum

The programme includes birdwatching, guided forest walks, wildlife tracking and studies of river ecology. Rafting on the Jia-Bharali River is also included in the activities. Naturalists and forest personnel guide participants during the sessions. Students maintain field journals to record observations made during the programme. Participants receive certificates after completing the residential course. The stated objectives include developing scientific thinking and environmental responsibility, while introducing students to biodiversity, ecology and conservation.

Local Knowledge and Field Learning

The curriculum includes the traditions and knowledge of local communities. Students learn through direct observation of forest and river environments, alongside guidance from naturalists and forest staff. The programme is intended for school and college students and may provide exposure to subjects such as wildlife research, ecology and conservation.
