SpiceJet Ends Boeing 737 MAX Operations

SpiceJet, an Indian low-cost carrier, suspended all Boeing 737 MAX passenger flight operations in August 2026 and removed the aircraft type from its active schedules. The Boeing 737 MAX is a narrow-body, twin-engine jet airliner developed by Boeing as part of the 737 family.

Boeing 737 MAX in Indian Aviation

SpiceJet operated Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft with registrations including VT-MXD, VT-MXE and VT-MXI. The last commercial flight by a SpiceJet Boeing 737 MAX was operated by VT-MXD from Kozhikode to Delhi on 20 August 2026.

The Boeing 737 MAX entered global service in 2017 and belongs to the 737 MAX series, which includes the MAX 7, MAX 8, MAX 9 and MAX 10 variants. The aircraft uses CFM International LEAP-1B engines and fly-by-wire flight control augmentation systems.

Lease Repossession and Regulatory Terms

In July 2026, two Dublin-based lessors owned by ICBC Financial Leasing filed Irrevocable Deregistration and Export Request Authorisations with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation. IDERA is a legal instrument under the Cape Town Convention framework that allows an aircraft owner or lessor to deregister and export an aircraft in specified default situations.

Aircraft lessors use IDERA filings to recover leased aircraft when operators default on lease obligations. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation is India’s civil aviation regulator and maintains the national aircraft register.

Fleet Size and Market Position

By 1 September 2026, SpiceJet’s operational fleet had fallen to 11 aircraft, including six Boeing 737NGs, two De Havilland Canada Dash 8-400 aircraft and three Airbus A320 aircraft on short-term lease. More than 40 other owned aircraft remained parked.

Financial records showed that SpiceJet’s domestic market share in India fell to 1.6% in July 2026 from 2.5% in May 2026. Boeing’s orders and deliveries database still listed an outstanding backlog of 129 gross Boeing 737 MAX aircraft for SpiceJet out of 142 aircraft ordered between 2013 and 2016.
