The dam was constructed under the reign of Maharaja Krishna Raja Wadiyar IV during a famine. Sir M. Visvesvaraya, the Chief Engineer and later 19th Diwan of Mysore, was the architect of this dam. The dam is adjacent to Brindavan Gardens.
