In 1766-67, Lieutenant John Ferguson led the East India Company forces to attack Singhbhum and capture Ghatshila Fort. Singhbhum, part of present-day Jharkhand, saw British military actions during early colonial expansion. The Raja of Dhalbhum opposed this attack fiercely. This event preceded later tribal revolts such as the Ho and Kol uprisings in the 1830s, where British troops continued operations in Singhbhum region.
