She fought against Portuguese colonization by leading a guerrilla army, forming alliances, and eliminating the Portuguese admiral. The festival includes an award given to women who have made significant achievements in research and culture. The award also considers language, tradition, and motherhood. The Indian Navy has also named a coastal patrol vessel after Rani Abbakka Chowta.
