Fangataufa is a small, low, narrow, coral atoll in the eastern side of the Tuamotu Archipelago, located in French Polynesia, an overseas collectivity of France. This permanently uninhabited common military zone atoll was the site of France's first two-stage thermonuclear test, code-named Canopus, detonated in 1968. It now serves as a wildlife sanctuary for various bird species.
