Killai Becomes Tamil Nadu’s First Climate-Resilient Village
Killai in Cuddalore district became Tamil Nadu’s first fully operational Climate Resilient Village on 22 July 2026. The project was implemented under the Tamil Nadu Climate Change Mission of the Department of Environment and Climate Change and used ecosystem restoration, renewable energy, and community-led climate action.
Climate Resilient Village Programme
The Climate Resilient Villages programme is a flagship initiative of the Tamil Nadu government launched in 2022-23. It covers 11 districts and includes 11 identified villages, with Killai being the first village to implement the full framework. The programme addresses climate-related risks in coastal settlements, including cyclones, sea-level rise, saline intrusion, coastal erosion, and biodiversity loss. It also includes measures for sustainable livelihoods in fishing communities.
Project Components in Killai
The Killai project was executed at a cost of ₹230.15 lakh through funds from the District Climate Change Mission and Corporate Environmental Responsibility. A major component was the restoration of a 3-km stretch of the Buckingham Canal, completed by 14 March 2026.
- The canal work included desilting and removal of plastic waste.
- The project also involved removal of invasive Prosopis juliflora.
- More than 3,000 native mangrove saplings were planted in the area.
- The village plan includes solar panels in public buildings, street lights, solar parks, solar driers, and cold storage facilities.
Static Facts on Coastal Climate Adaptation
Mangroves are salt-tolerant coastal plants that grow in intertidal zones and help stabilise shorelines. They are used in coastal restoration projects because their root systems support sediment retention and habitat formation. Prosopis juliflora is an invasive plant species found in several parts of India, including dry and coastal landscapes. Renewable energy installations in village-level adaptation projects often include solar panels, solar street lights, and solar-powered storage systems.
