Karnataka Considers Official Status for Kannada Flag

On 1 November 2026, Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar said the state government was considering official state-flag status for the red-and-yellow Kannada flag.

Proposed recognition and rules

The proposal is due for discussion during the legislature’s Belagavi winter session, scheduled from 30 November to 11 December 2026. The government is considering a legal framework for displaying the Kannada flag alongside the Indian national flag in compliance with national rules. It is also discussing mandatory hoisting at government offices and institutions receiving state support, and an order encouraging private organisations to display it. Legal experts have been consulted on ensuring recognition does not dishonour the national flag or breach related rules.

Difference from the 2018 proposal

Shivakumar said the current proposal concerns the plain yellow-and-red flag, not a redesigned tricolour bearing the Gandabherunda emblem. A previous Congress government sent that design to the Centre in 2018, but it did not receive approval. The stated aim of the current initiative is to strengthen Karnataka’s distinct identity, culture and self-respect within India’s federal structure.

Important Facts for Exams

  • Bicolour layout: The Kannada flag has two equally sized horizontal bands, with yellow above red.
  • Colour symbolism: On the Kannada flag, yellow and red represent turmeric and vermilion, associated in the source with auspiciousness, well-being, peace and courage.
  • Simple design adopted: The Kannada flag followed an earlier design featuring a Karnataka map and paddy crown; the simpler yellow-and-red version was adopted at public preference.
