India Operationalises Resident Mission in Costa Rica
India operationalised its resident diplomatic mission in San José, Costa Rica, with effect from 10 October 2026. The Ministry of External Affairs announced the mission’s operationalisation on 13 October 2026. Before its opening, India managed diplomatic engagement with Costa Rica through its mission in Panama and an honorary consular presence in San José.
Resident Diplomatic Missions
A resident diplomatic mission is a country’s permanent official representation in another country. It enables regular political contact and supports bilateral cooperation. India’s new mission is intended to expand its diplomatic presence in Central America and strengthen relations with Costa Rica. It will also support engagement on regional and multilateral issues.
The mission is expected to facilitate political engagement and promote trade, investment and economic cooperation. India and Costa Rica have identified pharmaceuticals and information technology among areas for greater engagement. The mission is also intended to support cooperation in areas of mutual interest and people-to-people contacts.
Costa Rica and Central America
Costa Rica is a country in Central America, and San José is its capital. It is bordered by Nicaragua to the north and Panama to the south-east, with the Caribbean Sea to its east and the Pacific Ocean to its west. Central America connects North America and South America and has coastlines on both the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean.
India’s engagement with Costa Rica forms part of its wider effort to increase diplomatic presence in under-represented regions. The move is also linked to the Focus LAC initiative, through which India seeks deeper engagement with countries in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Diplomatic and Consular Functions
Diplomatic missions conduct official relations between states and facilitate political and economic cooperation. Consular work includes assistance to a country’s nationals living or travelling abroad. India’s mission in Costa Rica is to provide enhanced consular assistance to Indian nationals and the Indian community there and help protect their interests.
