Bhargavastra Counter-Drone System
Bhargavastra is an indigenous, vehicle-mounted, multi-layered Counter-Swarm Drone System developed by Solar Defence and Aerospace Ltd. (SDAL) for the Indian Army. It was demonstrated in Nagpur on 24 July 2026 during a Make-II programme status review.
Counter-Drone Warfare
Counter-drone systems are designed to detect, track, identify, and neutralise hostile unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Bhargavastra is built as a hard-kill system, which means it destroys the target rather than only jamming its signals.
- Weaponised drones are UAVs fitted with explosives, sensors, or attack payloads.
- Loitering munitions are air-launched weapons that can remain airborne before striking a target.
- Drone swarms are groups of multiple drones operating in a coordinated manner.
System Features
Bhargavastra uses a dual-layer kill mechanism. The first layer uses unguided micro-rockets with a lethal radius of 20 metres, and the second layer uses precision-guided micro-missiles with an interception range of up to 2.5 kilometres. The system can detect larger UAVs up to 10 kilometres and smaller drones up to 6 kilometres. It integrates radar, Electro-Optical/Infrared (EO/IR) sensors, and passive radio-frequency detectors for target acquisition.
Command, Control and Trial Status
During the demonstration, the sensors detected and tracked a drone swarm, and the C4I suite generated a real-time air picture and assigned targets to the launcher. Actual rocket firing was not carried out at the facility because of safety reasons. SDAL stated that internal trials for Bhargavastra would be completed within two to three months from 24 July 2026. The system is described by its developers as one of the first fully integrated, vehicle-mounted, multi-layer counter-swarm drone systems with dedicated swarm-neutralisation capability.
