IITM Pune Hosts APARC Early Career Workshop
The Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), Pune, hosted the APARC Early Career Workshop on 11 October 2026 at Meghdoot Hall. Titled “The ECR Nexus: Connecting Voices, Tools, and Science to Society”, it was designed for early career researchers and students and served as a curtain-raiser for the Emerging Science, Technology and Innovation Conclave (ESTIC) 2026.
Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology
IITM is an autonomous research institute under the Ministry of Earth Sciences. Established in 1962 and based in Pune, it conducts research in meteorology, atmospheric sciences and climate science. Its work includes studying the Indian monsoon, tropical weather systems and atmospheric processes. IITM Director Dr Suryachandra A. Rao delivered the workshop’s welcome address. Dr T. Srinivasa Kumar, Secretary of the Ministry of Earth Sciences, addressed the event and outlined the vision and strategic objectives of ESTIC 2026.
APARC and Climate Research
APARC stands for Atmospheric Processes and their Role in Climate. It is a project of the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP), which supports international cooperation in climate research. APARC research examines atmospheric processes and their interactions with the climate system. The workshop featured a keynote presentation on artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning in Earth sciences by Dr Maria Molina of the University of Maryland. AI and machine-learning methods can be applied to large atmospheric datasets and used in weather and climate research.
Early Career Research in Earth Sciences
Approximately 120 national and international early career researchers, senior scientists, experts, editors and professionals participated in the workshop. Its stated aims included collaboration, skill development and cross-disciplinary dialogue among emerging atmospheric and Earth science researchers. An early career researcher event is organised every four years ahead of the APARC General Assembly.
