Glenn Maxwell Retires from International Cricket

Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell announced his retirement from international cricket on 2 November 2026, during an episode of The Final Word podcast. The 38-year-old is also retiring from domestic 50-over and four-day cricket for Victoria, but will continue playing in global T20 leagues.

International career and retirement

Across a 14-year career, Maxwell played 7 Tests, 149 One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and 130 T20 Internationals (T20Is), scoring 7,226 runs and taking 136 wickets. He was part of Australia’s ODI World Cup-winning teams in 2015 and 2023 and its T20 World Cup-winning team in 2021.

Maxwell had retired from ODI cricket in June 2025; his final ODI was the Champions Trophy semi-final against India. His last international match was against Oman at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in February 2026, where he took two wickets without batting. He said he needed to devote more time to his physical well-being, while Australia was giving younger players opportunities.

Domestic and T20 cricket

Cricket Australia omitted Maxwell from its central contract list for 2026–27, announced in April 2026. He will continue in T20 competitions, including the Big Bash League with Melbourne Stars, whose contract with him runs through the 2027–28 season. His five T20I centuries are the joint-most by any player.

Important Facts for Exams

  • Bowling development: Maxwell began as a medium-pace bowler before switching to off-spin at a young age.
  • Three-format milestone: A 2017 century against India made Maxwell the second Australian man to score centuries in all three international formats.
  • World Cup century: Against the Netherlands in 2023, Maxwell’s 106 off 44 balls was then the fastest century in Cricket World Cup history.
