VSSUT students build rover prototype for pothole detection, temporary repairs and potential defence surveillance

Students of Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology (VSSUT) in Odisha developed a functional rover prototype, described on 1 November 2026. Called the Terrain Inspection Rover Vehicle, it is designed to detect road potholes and support temporary repairs.

Rover’s proposed uses

The rover is intended to inspect roads, including national highways, and identify potholes for prompt attention. Its proposed functions also include surveillance of enemy movements in defence areas; this is a potential use, not a reported deployment. The prototype followed research, design and coding work by a six-member student team over about ten months.

Most components are Indian-made or available in India, while a few were sourced from abroad. The team has also applied for a design patent. The rover remains a prototype; its intended functions should not be read as established operational outcomes.
