Shubman Gill Wins Record Fifth ICC Player of the Month Award

Shubman Gill won his fifth ICC Player of the Month award on 13 October 2026 for his performances in September 2026. ICC Player of the Month Awards

The International Cricket Council (ICC) introduced its Player of the Month awards in 2021 to recognise performances by international cricketers during each calendar month. The awards have separate categories for men and women. Gill’s fifth award set a record among male recipients; his total matched the overall tally of West Indies captain Hayley Matthews, who has won five women’s awards. India also secured the women’s award for September 2026. Shafali Verma won it for her performances in the Asia Cup and Asian Games.

One Day International Cricket

An ODI is a limited-overs international cricket match in which each team can bat for a maximum of 50 overs. Each over consists of six legal deliveries, and a team’s innings ends when it is all out, exhausts its overs or completes a successful chase. In a successful chase, the team batting second reaches the target set by the team batting first. Batting records in ODIs include individual scores, centuries, double-centuries and the number of balls faced.

Gill’s September 2026 ODI Performances

In the first ODI against the West Indies in Thiruvananthapuram on 27 September 2026, Gill scored 110 runs from 108 balls as India won by eight wickets. Three days later, in Guwahati, he scored an unbeaten 223 from 133 balls as captain during India’s successful pursuit of a 406-run target. Gill’s innings included 26 fours and eight sixes. He reached his double-century in 117 balls, the fastest double-century in ODI history, and recorded the highest individual score by a captain in a successful ODI chase. His century in 62 balls was the fastest by an Indian captain in ODIs.
