India’s Private Space Investment Crosses $618 Million

Private investment in India’s space sector crossed USD 618.5 million by 31 March 2026. The cumulative funding rose from USD 100.5 million in 2021-22 to USD 618.5 million by 31 March 2026, and USD 187 million was recorded in 2026 alone. The Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology, Dr. Jitendra Singh, informed the Rajya Sabha about these figures on 23 July 2026.

Private Participation in India’s Space Sector

India’s space sector includes non-governmental entities, space startups, and private firms engaged in satellite systems, launch services, and downstream applications. The number of active space startups in India increased from one in 2014 to more than 400 by 2026. This growth is linked to policy changes that opened more space activities to private participation.

IN-SPACe and Authorisation Framework

The Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre, or IN-SPACe, was established in 2020 as an autonomous nodal agency. It promotes, authorises, and oversees private space activities in India. As of 14 July 2026, IN-SPACe had issued 105 authorisations to non-governmental entities for different space-related activities.

Policy and Funding Support

The India Space Policy 2023 provides the policy framework for private participation in the space sector. Liberalised foreign direct investment norms also apply to selected space activities. The government has also created the IN-SPACe Seed Fund and a ₹1,000 crore Venture Capital Fund for the Space Sector to support startups and private enterprises.
