IIT Kanpur Plans Defence Drone Hub and Strategic Research Expansion
On 14 October 2026, IIT Kanpur announced plans to establish a defence drone hub with the Ministry of Defence to develop critical components currently imported from abroad. The institute also launched the ‘Greater Than Us’ campaign, which targets USD 1 billion in fundraising by March 2029 for research and innovation. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said indigenous capability includes designing and creating technologies, in addition to domestic production.
Defence drones and indigenous components
The proposed hub will focus on drone applications for defence and the domestic development of components used in drones. IIT Kanpur Director Manindra Agrawal said that reducing dependence on imported components is an objective of the initiative. A drone, or unmanned aerial vehicle, operates without a pilot on board and may be remotely controlled or programmed for autonomous flight. The institute has identified drones as one of seven strategic areas for support through its fundraising campaign.
Strategic technology research
IIT Kanpur’s seven identified areas are artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, drones, medical technology, sustainable technologies, quantum technologies and semiconductors. Its defence-related research also includes specialised stealth materials and quantum sensing. Quantum magnetometers measure magnetic fields; research at the institute includes possible applications in sensing submarine movements. Cybersecurity concerns the protection of computer systems, networks and data from digital attacks, while semiconductors are materials used to control the flow of electric current in electronic devices.
Defence research collaboration and funding
The DRDO-Industry-Academia Centre of Excellence at IIT Kanpur is a collaboration model linking defence research, industry and academic institutions. Singh supported a proposal to establish a School of Defence Technologies at the institute. The government has approved a ₹1 lakh crore Research, Development and Innovation Scheme to encourage private-sector investment in research and advanced technologies. IIT Kanpur’s campaign is intended to support research initiatives, recruit talent and develop laboratories and other research infrastructure.
