Deepti Gaur Mukerjee Appointed Higher Education Secretary

Deepti Gaur Mukerjee, a 1993-batch Indian Administrative Service officer of the Madhya Pradesh cadre, was appointed Secretary of the Department of Higher Education under the Ministry of Education on 10 August 2026. The Department of Personnel and Training issued the order during a bureaucratic reshuffle that also changed several senior posts in the Union Government.

Department of Higher Education

The Department of Higher Education functions under the Ministry of Education and deals with universities, colleges, technical education, and central higher education policy. The post of Secretary is the senior-most administrative position in the department and is held by an Indian Administrative Service officer.

Vineet Joshi was moved to the Ministry of Panchayati Raj in July 2026, and Mukerjee replaced him in the Higher Education Secretary post. The July 23, 2026 order that had named Rajasthan cadre IAS officer Naresh Pal Gangwar for the post was later modified.
