Uttar Pradesh: Parichha Weir Gets ICID Heritage Recognition

The International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage (ICID) designated the 140-year-old Parichha Weir in Jhansi as a World Heritage Irrigation Structure (WHIS) on 13 August 2026. The structure is linked to the Betwa Canal system, which irrigates land in Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.

World Heritage Irrigation Structure

WHIS is a recognition given by ICID to historic irrigation structures with engineering, cultural, and operational value. ICID is an international body concerned with irrigation, drainage, and flood management, and it maintains a list of heritage irrigation structures from different countries.

Parichha Weir: Engineering Features

The Parichha Weir is a rubble-stone masonry structure that stretches 1,174 metres and stands 16.8 metres above the riverbed. It uses 318 steel falling shutters and has a reservoir capacity of 2,400 million cubic feet.

The Betwa Canal system associated with the weir extends about 2,654 km and irrigates 4,28,360 hectares across five districts in Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. The weir is located on the Betwa River in the Jhansi region.

Historical Background

The canal system was first proposed by Captain Strachey in 1855. Construction began in 1881 at a cost of ₹40 lakh, and the system was commissioned in 1886.

The Parichha Weir became the second major structure in the Jhansi region to receive ICID heritage status after the Sukwa-Dukwan Weir was recognised in 2022.
