Sriganganagar’s Basant Wins Silver at World Athletics U20 Event

Basant Kumar Meghwal, a 19-year-old high jumper from Anupgarh in Rajasthan’s Sri Ganganagar district, won silver in the men’s high jump at the World Athletics U20 Championships in Eugene, Oregon, United States, on 8 August 2026. He became the first Indian athlete to win a high jump medal at the junior global championships.

The World Athletics U20 Championships is the global track and field competition for athletes under 20 years of age. It is organised by World Athletics and is held at regular intervals for junior athletes in events governed by international athletics rules.

Men’s High Jump Event

The men’s high jump is a field event in which athletes clear a horizontal bar without dislodging it. In this event, Meghwal, Algeria’s Younes Ayachi, and Great Britain’s Otis Poole all cleared 2.21 metres and failed at 2.24 metres, and the medals were decided by countback.
