Rural development models from three Uttar Pradesh districts included among 27 selected national administrative practices
Models from Bahraich, Mirzapur and Gorakhpur were included among 27 administrative practices selected nationwide by the Union Cabinet Secretariat. A central team from the National Centre for Good Governance visited the districts to verify the initiatives’ results. The models received support from the Uttar Pradesh State Rural Livelihood Mission.
Three district initiatives
In Ghummana Bharu gram panchayat, Bahraich, a 43-kilowatt-peak solar microgrid supplies about 200 families and irrigates 100 acres of farmland through 10 solar pumps.
Mirzapur’s Chhanwar Agro Farmer Producer Company was established in 2022–23 and is run by 1,221 women shareholders. The company also completed a 25-metric-tonne wheat supply, earning a reported business margin of about Rs 10.50 lakh.
In Chhatahi gram panchayat, Gorakhpur, a women’s fish-producer group has begun fish farming using biofloc technology.
Important Facts for Exams
- Island operation: A microgrid can disconnect from the wider grid and operate autonomously in island mode, enabling local electricity supply independently of the main network.
- Nitrogen conversion: In biofloc systems, adding a readily available carbon source helps bacteria take up nitrogen while generating biomass that can supplement cultured animals’ feed.
- Microbial feed: Biofloc comprises nutrient-rich bacterial flocs containing proteins and lipids, which provide food for cultured fish throughout the day.
