NTPC Targets 149 GW Installed Capacity by 2032

On 4 November 2026, NTPC Limited announced plans to raise its installed generation capacity to 149 gigawatts (GW) by 2032. Chairman and Managing Director Gurdeep Singh outlined the plan at the KPMG ENRich 2026 event in New Delhi. It involves adding about 58 GW to the company’s existing 91 GW capacity.

Capacity expansion and nuclear plans

The expansion will draw on several energy sources, including renewable energy and nuclear power. NTPC’s broader roadmap targets 250 GW of capacity by 2037, including about 30 GW of nuclear capacity. Feasibility studies for proposed nuclear projects have been completed in Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and Odisha; the company is exploring further locations.

Electricity demand

Singh said India’s power demand rose 21 per cent in October 2026 and had been increasing month after month. He also said India had not experienced the energy-price surge seen in other parts of the world amid global turmoil.

Important Facts for Exams

  • Dispatch coordination: NTPC’s station schedules and dispatch are coordinated regionally by load-dispatch centres, which oversee integrated grid operation in their respective regions.
  • Generation mix: NTPC’s listed generating portfolio includes coal, combined-cycle gas and liquid-fuel, hydro, wind and solar stations.
  • Diversification rationale: NTPC’s 2005 renaming accompanied its entry into hydro and nuclear generation and backward integration into coal mining.
