Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessel Shruti Launched

The Indian Navy’s second Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessel (NGOPV), named Shruti and designated Yard 3037, was launched on 11 August 2026 by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd (GRSE) in Kolkata, West Bengal. The vessel was launched in the presence of Vice Admiral Sanjay Sadhu, Controller of Warship Production & Acquisition, and Manika Sadhu performed the formal launch ceremony.

Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessel Programme

The NGOPV programme is an 11-ship Indian Navy project for offshore patrol duties. The Ministry of Defence signed the contract on 30 March 2023 for ₹9,781 crore, with seven ships assigned to Goa Shipyard Limited and four ships assigned to GRSE.

Design and Operational Features

GRSE’s NGOPVs are 113 metres long and 14.6 metres wide. The vessels have a displacement of 3,000 tonnes, a maximum speed of 23 knots, and an endurance of 8,500 nautical miles at 14 knots.

Offshore Patrol Vessels are naval platforms used for maritime surveillance, coastal security, anti-piracy tasks, and protection of sea lines of communication. The Indian Navy uses OPVs for peacetime presence missions and low-intensity maritime operations.

Shipbuilding at GRSE

GRSE launched its first NGOPV, Sanghmitra (Yard 3039), on 20 May 2026 in Kolkata. GRSE Chairman and Managing Director Cmde P R Hari stated that the shipyard aims to deliver five warships to the Navy and launch the remaining two contracted NGOPVs by the end of the 2026–27 financial year.

• Shruti is the second NGOPV launched by GRSE under the Indian Navy programme.
• The first overall NGOPV under the 11-ship programme was Shachi, launched by Goa Shipyard Limited on 31 March 2026.
• Fincantieri launched the Italian Navy’s first next-generation Offshore Patrol Vessel, Ugolino Vivaldi, on 22 February 2026.
• NGOPVs are designed for offshore patrol, surveillance, and maritime security roles.

Related Shipyard and Launch Details

Shruti is part of the four-ship NGOPV order placed with GRSE. The shipyard’s earlier launch, Sanghmitra, and the parallel launch of Shachi at Goa Shipyard Limited are part of the same Indian Navy procurement programme.
