Kullu women’s society has held handicraft stalls in Delhi and at the Dussehra fair

Mountain Yarn Multipurpose Society set up a handicraft stall at Dhalpur ground during the International Dussehra festival in Kullu, Himachal Pradesh, for the second time. The society, formed a year earlier, had previously displayed its products in Delhi, where they received a good response.

Women’s products and market access

The society has 2,235 women from rural areas, including members of self-help groups in the Naggar, Bhuntar and Kullu development blocks. They make products at home and supply them to the society for sale. The stall offers woollen garments, socks, gloves, baskets, handmade toys, teddy bears and crochet items.

Chairperson Ritu said the society provides training in handloom and handicraft work and aims to connect more women with wider markets. Women receive payment for their products, and the society’s profits are shared equally among its members.

Important Facts for Exams

  • Warp and weft: Loom weaving holds the warp threads under tension so the weft can be interwoven across them.
  • Loom motions: Loom operation involves three principal motions: shedding, picking and battening.
  • Crochet stitches: In crochet, each stitch is completed before the next; knitting keeps multiple stitches open at the same time.
