India, Romania Sign Three Agreements in Bucharest

India and Romania signed three agreements in Bucharest on 23 July 2026 during the state visit of President Droupadi Murmu to Romania. The agreements cover science and technology, sports, and Indian studies, and they were concluded after delegation-level talks between President Droupadi Murmu and President Nicuşor Dan.

Science and Technology Cooperation

The Cooperation Programme in science and technology was signed between Romania’s National Authority for Research, under the Ministry of Education and Research, and India’s Department of Science and Technology, under the Ministry of Science and Technology. Science and technology agreements between governments usually cover research exchange, joint projects, and institutional collaboration in identified fields.

Education and Indian Studies

The Memorandum of Understanding provides for the establishment of a Chair of Indian Studies at the University of Bucharest. The Indian Council for Cultural Relations supports academic chairs abroad for teaching, research, and cultural studies related to India.

Sports and Bilateral Cooperation

A Joint Declaration of Intent in sport was signed between Romania’s National Agency for Sport and India’s Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. The two sides also set a target to double bilateral trade within three years and identified manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, renewable energy, green hydrogen, agricultural production, fertilisers, digital public infrastructure, and artificial intelligence as areas for cooperation.
